New Spear Course: Difficult Conversations in the Operatory for the Hygienist
By Abigail Pfeiffer on July 7, 2015 | commentsYour hygienist has a lot of contact with your patients. Just as dentists often need to have difficult conversations with patients about treatment and payments, hygienists often have the same experiences in their interactions with patients. Spear’s latest Hygiene course, Difficult Conversations in the Operatory for the Hygienist, highlights common conversations that can create anxiety or uncertainty for hygienists.
Hygienist Trisha O’Hehir guides participants through three conversations most hygienists experience frequently. After each scenario, Dr. Kevin Kwiecien breaks down each conversation and highlights how Trisha used specific methods to handle the conversation and resolve it in a positive way. This course is beneficial for hygienists to learn specific verbiage that can diffuse tension and create a safe environment for future conversations with patients.
After viewing this course, you will learn how to:
- Diffuse conflict
- Keep the focus on the patient
- Use humble inquiry (Ask for clarification)
- Communicate feelings and empathy
- Communicate the dental benefit
